PCI (Payment Card Industry) is an organisation formed by major card brands to ensure merchants who store, process or transmit cardholder data implement appropriate controls to protect their customers’ payment card information. As a result, a document called the DSS (Data Security Standard) was created which contains a set of 12 requirements.
A PCI Readiness Assessment is an evaluation of an organisation's compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). If your organisation stores, processes or transmits cardholder data, you are required to be compliant with PCI DSS.
Non-compliance could result in heavy fines being imposed on the acquiring bank which will most likely be passed on to the non-compliant merchant. These fines range from US$5,000 to US$100, 000 depending on the period of non-compliance and other factors
